Stiliyan Petrov Foundation 3 James Milner Foundation 3: A match for cancer
AS the chorus of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ echoed around Celtic Park on Saturday ahead of kick-off, those words held extra significance for so many within the stadium, there to support ‘A Match For Cancer’.
The match, which was sponsored by Dafabet and Laduma, saw Celtic legend, Stiliyan Petrov – who overcame Leukaemia after being diagnosed in 2012 – and Liverpool midfielder, James Milner pull together opposing squads from the worlds of football and entertainment.
Celtic manager, Brendan Rodgers and his Liverpool counterpart, Jurgen Klopp, took charge of the respective squads and both had an array of talent at their disposal.
Among those to feature in the Petrov squad were Celtic Captain, Scott Brown, who was joined by the likes of Hoops legend Henrik Larsson, Manchester United’s Ashley Young and Ballon D’Or winner Hristo Stoichkov.
James Milner’s squad was equally impressive, boasting talents such as Dirk Kuyt, Joe Hart and Luis Garcia, to name but a few.
The match was a tremendous success and charity was the winner on the day, as the two sides played out an entertaining 3-3 draw. Net proceeds will be devoted to tackling cancer through three equal beneficiary charities – Celtic FC Foundation, The Stiliyan Petrov Foundation and The James Milner Foundation.
Celtic FC Foundation and the Stiliyan Petrov Foundation will work with two cancer charity partners – the Beatson Cancer Charity and the Schiehallion Ward through Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity – to support cancer patients and their families. The James Milner Foundation – set up around the time of Stiliyan’s diagnosis – has Bloodwise, the charity that combats blood cancer, as one of its major beneficiaries.
Celtic FC Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell, said: “We are very grateful to all the fans who supported Saturday’s event so well and made the occasion such a great success. A Match for Cancer brought together so many great names from football in support of a great cause and, of course, we also thank everyone who gave their time so generously in taking part.
“Celtic will always aim to do all it can to help those in need and through events such as the weekend’s match we continue to make a positive difference to the lives of so many. We thank our supporters once again for their fantastic contribution to this work.”
Celtic FC Foundation Chief Executive, Tony Hamilton echoed these sentiments and added: “I would like to whole-heartedly express my thanks to all of the supporters who got behind A Match For Cancer and helped to make it such a wonderful day.
“Cancer is a disease which affects so many people and through the funds raised from this match, we now have an opportunity to help make a positive difference to the lives of many patients and their families, when they need it most.
“Special thanks must also go to everyone who took part in the match and, in particular, Stiliyan and James. Their efforts and the efforts of both of their Foundations in making this event a success have been phenomenal, and their continued drive to improve the lives of others is incredible.”
It truly was another very special day in Paradise.
